City still on course after Blackpool hold Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur snatched a late 1-1 home draw with Blackpool on Saturday but it was probably not enough for their hopes of securing fourth-place in the Premier League even though Manchester City were beaten by Everton.

City's 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park earlier opened the door a little for Spurs, who visit them on Tuesday, but relegation-threatened Blackpool led with a Charlie Adam penalty -- after he had had another penalty saved a minute earlier -- until Jermain Defoe levelled in the 89th minute.

With three games remaining, City, who face Stoke City in the FA Cup final next week, are fourth on 62 points with Spurs fifth on 56 and Liverpool on 55.

Arsenal, who visit Stoke on Sunday, have 67 points while Chelsea are second on 70 and Manchester United top on 73 ahead of their crunch title clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

West Ham United ended a run of five defeats with a 1-1 home draw against Blackburn Rovers but remain bottom of the standings and favourites for relegation.

CLASSY SILVA

Everton's win was their seventh in eight meetings with City but it looked unlikely as the visitors dominated the first half.

David Silva looked a class above anyone else on the pitch but though he set up Yaya Toure for the 28th-minute opener City wasted several other good chances and paid a heavy price.

Sylvain Distin equalised against his former club in the 65th minute and seven minutes later Phil Neville swung in a cross which Leon Osman thumped in with a magnificent header.

"It was impossible to lose this game today after all the chances we had," City manager Roberto Mancini told Sky Sports.

"The players need to learn that when we have a chance to score we can't be selfish, it's not important who scores."

The Italian, however, had no concerns about hanging on to fourth place. "We don't have a problem for this...if we had won today we could have prepared very well for the FA Cup final but now we'll have to play very hard on Tuesday."

Everton remain seventh and manager David Moyes said: "A brilliant performance by our players in the second half, though it didn't look likely after 45 minutes.

"Then we started showing our spirit and our attitude and it was a great goal to win it."

That result gave hope to Spurs but it was Blackpool, who beat them in February for their solitary win in the last 16 games, who created most of the chances.

Heurelho Gomes, who had blundered on several occasions in recent weeks, had kept Spurs in the game with several good saves, the best of them a brilliant penalty stop from Charlie Adam after 75 minutes.

Seconds later though he charged from his goal and brought down Gary Taylor-Fletcher to give away a second penalty and this time Adam went the other way to score.

Defoe's shot out of the blue set up a desperate finale but with away games at City and Liverpool up next, Tottenham's dream of another crack at the Champions League looks over.

There was also concern for PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale who was carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury after being caught by a wild-looking tackle from Adam that could have resulted in a red card.

Chelsea and United have everything to win in 'final'

Manchester United and Chelsea will be riding different waves of momentum when they clash on Sunday in what their managers have billed as the make-or-break moment of the Premier League season.

Chelsea are energised by an incredible turnaround in their fortunes in recent weeks when they have moved within three points of the leaders having trailed by 15 while United are on a high after reaching the Champions League final this week.

The pair face each other at Old Trafford in a mouthwatering match where victory for United would mean that the title is all but sewn up while a win for Chelsea would put the champions top on goal difference with two matches to play.

"If we win, I think we should win the league," Ferguson, whose side would need only one point from their final games against strugglers Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool to guarantee a record 19th title, told a news conference on Friday.

For Ancelotti, it is not quite so straightforward but the mere fact that his side are back in the hunt is surprising to some when two months ago pundits were wondering whether they would even manage a top-four finish for a Champions League spot.

"Nobody thought that we were able to fight," the Italian told a news conference. "A lot of time we spoke about the position for the Champions League and nobody said that we could come back to fight for the title."

Ferguson called it a "big game" and Ancelotti dubbed it a "final" while neutral fanss can sit back and enjoy what is basically a title decider with United on 73 points to Chelsea's 70 and both teams having the same goal difference.

DESTINY CALLS

While the pair agreed on the magnitude of the meeting at a ground where United have remained unbeaten for more than a year since Chelsea last visited them in the league, their reasons for how they came to be in this position were rather different.

Ever the pragmatist, Ferguson pointed to his team's "fantastic" home record in which they have dropped just two points all season, while Ancelotti hailed the more abstract notion of "destiny" helping them to eight wins in nine games.

The moment the stars began aligning for Chelsea was after a 2-1 comeback win over United at Stamford Bridge in March. The champions had seemed to face an impossible mission to catch up with the leaders after a damaging mid-season slump.

Dropped points for United, especially last Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal, put Chelsea back in the thick of things and having got this far Ancelotti urged his players to keep calm.

"Our bad moment was too long but now the destiny helps us to fight for the title again," said the Italian. "We built last year a very good relationship with the players, a very good atmosphere and this helped us to maintain a good control of our confidence during that moment.

"We have to prepare this game like a final. To prepare a final you have to stay relaxed as much as possible."
Keeping calm, though, is exactly what United do so well at Old Trafford.

"Our home record is fantastic," Ferguson said. "It's probably the best in Europe, and it has to be on Sunday."

David Beckham in car accident, unhurt

Soccer star David Beckham was at the wheel of a Cadillac that struck another vehicle on a Los Angeles-area freeway, but he was not injured or cited in the collision, police said on Saturday.

Beckham was driving on Friday on the 405 Freeway in Torrance, about 20 miles (32 km) from downtown Los Angeles, when he struck a stalled Mitsubishi, the California Highway Patrol said.

The owner of the Mitsubishi, a 40 year-old Los Angeles man, complained of pain and was taken to a hospital, police said.

The English-born Beckham plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy professional soccer team. His wife, Victoria, is a former member of the Spice Girls group.

Sehwag to undergo shoulder surgery

Virender Sehwag will miss the rest of the IPL after having decided to undergo surgery on his injured shoulder.

It could also cast a shadow over his place in India's upcoming tour of the West Indies, from June 4, and perhaps even the England series that begins in mid-July, reports ESPNcricinfo.

"It will be a miracle if he plays another match," PB Vanchi, director of GMR Sports Pvt.Ltd, owners of Delhi Daredevils, said. Delhi, who are currently seventh in the points table, have three games left and have a slim chance of making it to the qualifiers.

Vanchi said it was a mutual decision that was taken after Sehwag held talks with the BCCI on his injury. He was advised to undergo surgery as soon as possible.

"He has a problem. In the last match, too he struggled. The BCCI is making the arrangements for the surgery," Vanchi said. "They are waiting for a date. If he needs the surgery we are not going to be coming in the way."

Sehwag confirmed the development and is expected to travel to London at the earliest for the surgery.

The injury is a long-standing one which had ruled him out of the two World Twenty20s and more recently the one-day series in South Africa in January.

Sehwag was declared fit in time for World Cup after having undergone rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Though he did not bowl during India's victorious campaign, Sehwag finished seventh overall in the run charts, in the tournament, including a blistering century in the opening game against Bangladesh.

Sehwag's decision to play the IPL was always going to be potentially risky one, especially in light of the heavy workload during the World Cup.

But he had the dual responsibility of leading Delhi as well as being their best batsman. Sehwag is currently the top scorer in the IPL with 424 runs and his loss is likely to further hamper Delhi's chances, who have manged just four wins out of their 11 games played so far.

Australia allrounder James Hopes will lead Delhi in their remaining IPL games.
